Biography

Dr Robert Marshall gained an academic scholarship to Canford School in Dorset, and qualified from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals in London in 1996, gaining a First Class intercalated BSc in the History of Medicine along the way.

After surgical house jobs at Guy’s and Lewisham Hospitals, he completed his medical house job and a year as a senior house officer in Kingston, before leaving London to undertake a medical rotation in Plymouth. Interest in rheumatology developed during that time, and after completing the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians in 2000, he embarked on higher specialist training in Rheumatology the following year.

An initial post as a Specialist Registrar at the Bristol Royal Infirmary led to an interest in teaching, and in 2002-3 he undertook a post as a Clinical Fellow in Musculoskeletal Medical Education at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, and the University of Bristol. He subsequently competed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2006. He currently has major involvement in undergraduate medical education, and is Deputy Academy Dean for the South Bristol Academy of the University of Bristol Medical School.

After completing rheumatology training in Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Poole, he worked as a Locum Consultant in Portsmouth before taking up his post as Consultant Rheumatologist at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in 2006. In 2014 he took over the role of Clinical Lead for Rheumatology at University Hospitals Bristol.
